New World Screwworm

Key DeerOn Oct. 3, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service confirmed the presence of New World Screwworm (NWS) in three Key Deer on Big Pine Key, FL.

An agricultural state of emergency in Monroe County was declared on Oct. 3. Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACs) has established an animal health check point at mile marker 106 and are working with state and federal officials to eradicate NWS as quickly as possible. Sterile Insect Release began on Oct. 11  and will expand to additional keys.
