South Florida Water Management District Votes to Counter Sugar Offer
In a landmark decision that impacts south Florida residents and Everglades Restoration for generations to come, the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board voted this afternoon to counter the contract offer made by U.S. Sugar after two days of presentations, public comments and deliberation.
Of particular concern is being able to obtain financing that will not cut in to the District’s core projects of water quality, flood control, water supply and Everglades restoration.
The vote passed 4 to 3 with Patrick Rooney, Mike Collins and Charles Dauray voting against the motion. Paul Huck was not present and had abstained due to conflict of interest.
Agriculture in the Everglades Agricultural Area south of the lake is particularly concerned about the low lease-back rates that afford U.S. Sugar an unfair competitive advantage and the economic security of the glades region including the towns of Clewiston, South Bay, Pahokee, Belle Glade and Moore Haven.
The Water Management District has until September 25, 2009 to obtain appropriate funding thus closing the deal.
