***Governor Crist Signs Budget***

Language Protecting UF/IFAS Signed Into Law

ISSUE:
Wednesday, Governor Crist signed into law a $66 billion budget that includes language that protects the UF/IFAS budget. Proviso language was included during the budget process stating that funds "...are provided for the research and extension services of IFAS and shall not be transferred or used for any other purpose."

Governor Crist should be thanked for supporting agriculture by keeping this language intact.

IMPACT:
This is good news for Florida agriculture.  The UF/IFAS budget has already been cut by approximately $17 million, and if additional funds had been diverted, the ability of UF/IFAS to meet Florida agriculture's needs could have been greatly limited.

ACTION:
Please take time to thank Governor Crist for ensuring that the UF/IFAS budget was not cut even more than the legislature intended.
