UF President Machen Seeks Deeper Cuts for UF/IFAS

ACTION:

ISSUE:
The State of Florida is facing a major shortfall in funding. Within the university system there has been an anticipated budget cut of roughly 4 percent. Anticipating that cut, administrators within UF/IFAS have been developing a plan to cut their budget by that percentage.

Dr. Bernie Machen, president of the University of Florida has recently informed UF/IFAS officials that they are expected to make even greater cuts to their budget. However, Dr. Machen has not yet supplied any specific amounts or percentages.

Florida Farm Bureau is concerned that UF/IFAS will be forced to shoulder more than its proportionate share of budget cuts.

Questions have reportedly arisen regarding agriculture’s importance to the state as well as the need for an overhaul of UF/IFAS. It is important for members of the agricultural community and others to inform both Dr. Machen and their legislators about the important role of agriculture and the importance of UF/IFAS.

IMPACT:
The impact that UF/IFAS has on the state of Florida is enormous. From supporting Florida’s unique agricultural production by conducting research that is not being done anywhere else, to serving the state’s youth through the 4-H program. From programs designed to help homeowners make the best environmental decisions about their landscapes, to serving as a leader in researching alternative energy. UF/IFAS has a tremendous positive impact on both agriculture and all of Florida.

If hit with significantly disproportionate cuts, UF/IFAS may be forced to eliminate vital programs that greatly enhance the lives of all Floridians.
