Prescribed Fire Awareness Week

Jan. 26, 2016

12The Florida Cabinet has designated Jan. 24-Jan. 30 as Prescribed Fire Awareness Week. Events will be held across the state promoting the use and benefits of prescribed fire.

Prescribed fire is a safe way to benefit natural resources and reduce the risk of unwanted wildfires later.  Prescribed fires are an integral part of land management. They promote tree growth, recycle nutrients back to the soil and minimize the spread of pest insects and disease.

The Florida Forest Service treated more than 246,000 acres of state forests with prescribed fire in the past year, the highest number ever reported by a state forestry agency in U.S. history. In recognition for the state’s record-breaking prescribed fire program, the Florida Forest Service received the Wildfire Mitigation Fire Service Leadership award, an honor presented by the USDA’s Forest Service along with three professional associations.
