Summer Camp: "Down on the Farm"

07/09/2008 - 8:00am
07/11/2008 - 3:00pm

The UF/Miami-Dade County 4-H program, in cooperation with the Farm Bureau, will conduct a "Down On the Farm" summer camp July 9-11, 2008. They are expecting over 200 youth from the Boys and Girls Club of North Miami to participate in this fun and educational event. Lessons include hand-washing and food safety with a black-light experiment to show how germs are transferred. Additional learning stations will include a nutrition puppet show, making a healthy snack and a video explaining the process of milk from the cow to pouring it on your cereal. A relay game will demonstrate where food comes from. The "farmer" will put on their hat, milk a four food wooden cow (with a disposable glove utter), relay eggs from the nest to the carton, throw fabric food beanbags into the food guide pyramid, then pass the hat to the next "farmer". While this hands-on program teaches healthy eating habits it also shows where food comes from (other than the grocery store)!
